The mission
The Wroclaw University Library is a university-wide research, teaching, and service institution, also serving as a public library open to all. Its mission is to support research, teaching, and the development of information literacy, including digital literacy, as well as active participation in the cultural life of the University, city, and region.
The Library creates a welcoming, modern, and open space for knowledge, culture, and heritage, harmoniously combining the tradition of academic libraries with the opportunities offered by the digital world. It integrates print, special, and archival resources with electronic infrastructure — library systems, repositories, e-resource platforms, and remote access tools, striving to provide a coherent and intuitive environment for research and teaching. By digitizing collections and developing services enabling their reuse in research and education, it strives to preserve and secure unique historical collections while ensuring broad and equal access to global, electronic, and open resources.
In its activities WUL is guided by the principles of social responsibility, collaboration, and openness. It develops partnerships within the GLAM (Galleries-Libraries-Archives-Museums) ecosystem and collaborates with cultural, art, and heritage institutions, strengthening the Library's role as an active participant and co-creator of cultural life. Joint initiatives — exhibitions, educational projects, programs promoting knowledge and culture, serve to foster dialogue between science, art, and the local community.
The Library actively supports the scientific community, e.g. in the area of digital humanities, creating a collaborative space for researchers, librarians, and IT specialists that facilitates the implementation of interdisciplinary research projects.
As a learning organization, the Library invests in the development of employee competences, modernizes its services and implements innovative technological solutions to more effectively support users in the process of acquiring, interpreting and creating knowledge.
Drawing from the tradition of an academic institution, the WUL is developing towards a hybrid library combining the tasks of a traditional library with advanced digital infrastructure and the function of an information and digital competence center, a modern center of education, information and culture, combining the protection of European heritage with innovative methods of sharing knowledge.
