Wroclaw University Library incorporated into the nationwide library network
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Culture and National Heritage prof. Piotr Gliński incorporated the Wroclaw University Library into the nationwide library network.
The application of the Wroclaw University Library had previously received a positive opinion from the State Patronage Department of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the National Library.
Libraries that are part of the library network are obliged to cooperate in the collecting, developing, storaging and sharing of collections, preparation and dissemination of bibliographic and documentation information, research and development activities as well as training and professional development of library employees and exchange and transfer of library materials and information.
The conditions for inclusion in the nationwide library network, information about the network and its tasks have been posted on the website devoted to it.
The collections of the University Library together with specialized libraries have over four million volumes. They contain publications from all disciplines of knowledge at the University of Wrocław, with particular emphasis on the humanities and social sciences. The library also specializes in collecting Silesiaca and Lusatiaca as part of the Silesian-Lusatian Collection, thematically related to Wroclaw, Silesia and Lusatia regions. These collections constitute one of the largest collections on this subject in Europe and provide a huge amount of source materials documenting the multi-ethnic culture and rich history of the Region. Moreover, the University Library in Wrocław has large special collections, which are its great asset. Among these rich resources of cultural heritage special mention deserves the largest collections in Poland of richly illuminated medieval manuscripts and the old prints, which is additionaly one of the largest collection in Europe – including the second largest collection of incunabula in Poland. The University Library is also proud of its great music, cartography and graphic collections. Among these historical resources there are real treasures and unique items on a global scale.
