Duties performed in the Workshop

Based on Workshop’s own equipment and conservation materials - qualified team of employees performs traditional conservation. During that process each library’s item is subjected to appropriate conservation procedures i.e. is treated individually accordingly to its specific nature and state of preservation. It is vitally important to protect and repair selected groups and individual items, that are severely damaged. Bookbinding protection is of particular importance in preventive activities concerning library materials:

As a part of bookbinding and restoration works, following tasks are being performed:

  • binding of books and periodicals originating from storage collections and reference collections, binding of Library’s own publications,

  • conservation and repairs of damaged items. Workshop creates following types of bindings: half-linen and linen bindings for new publications, leather bindings (half and full binding) for exceptionally valuable and rare publications, rebinding for items published in the 19th and in the beginnings of the 20th century,

  • binding gallantry: protective boxes for rare and untypical objects, small boxes, cases, folders, as well as tabs for order slips and reference cards and dividers for catalog,

  • disinfection of collection (lyophilization).
