Dr Hans Peter Syndikus

Hans Peter Syndikus, 1927-2021, Ph.D. in philology, was a classical philologist and teacher in the gymnasium. After studying classical philology, German philology and archeology in Bamberg and Munich (1947-1952), in 1958 he obtained a doctorate from the University of Munich on the basis of a dissertation on Lucan's poem about the Civil War. From 1952 until his retirement in 1992, he taught in Bavarian gymnasiums, most recently as director of studies at the Weilheim Gymnasium. He published essays, encyclopedic articles and numerous reviews of Latin poetry, especially in the magazines "Gnomon" and "Gymnasium", but most of all general interpretations of Horace's lyrical work, poems of Catullus and Elegies from Propercio, which attracted international attention.
