Rules for the usage of digital piano and MIDI keyboard in the WUL's Special Collections Reading Room
Digital piano is a standalone instrument designed for learning and practicing playing. Equipped with a keyboard mechanism similar to that of an acoustic instrument and realistic pressure response, it enables the development of proper playing techniques and musical sensitivity. In the library space, the digital piano serves as an educational tool supporting learning to read music, developing piano techniques, and working with musical repertoire. Volume control and the use of headphones allow for individual practice in an environment conducive to silence and concentration.
MIDI keyboard is a control tool used in educational and creative work with sound. It does not have its own sounds or speakers and requires connection to a computer (or other device with appropriate music software and a USB port) to operate. In a library setting, a MIDI keyboard allows users to become familiar with the basics of music technology, work with virtual instruments, and create and edit sound (e.g., through musical transcriptions). Unlike a digital piano, which is a standalone instrument intended primarily for playing, a MIDI keyboard serves as an educational and workshop tool. For its proper operation, users must have the appropriate software installed.
General rules
Digital piano and MIDI keyboard are part of the equipment in the WUL's Special Collections' Reading Room. Users are responsible for the proper use of the equipment during it's usage. Any faults, malfunctions, or damage to the equipment should be reported immediately to the librarian on duty.
The digital piano and MIDI keyboard in the WUL's Special Collections' Reading Room can be used by the WUL's Users who have a library/student's ID/employee's ID card, valid and free from any arrears.
Digital piano and MIDI keyboard are intended for study or scientific work and cannot be used for other purposes.
In order to maintain the well being of other users, the Reading Room's librarian determines the rules of usage (use with or without headphones).
In case of any doubts or technical problems, assistance is available from the librarian in the Reading Room or from an employee of the Music Collections Department.
In the event of damage to the piano, keyboard or headphones resulting from improper use by the User, the User shall be liable for any damage caused.
Digital piano and MIDI keyboard are included in the reservation system available on the Library website. Reservations can be made by logging into the cabin reservation system and selecting the Special Collections' Reading Room tab. The following reservation rules apply:
the minimum equipment reservation time is 1 hour. It is possible to extend the time of use, provided the equipment has not been reserved by another User.,
short-term card holders can use a digital piano or MIDI keyboard during the period of card's validity,
other users are provided with the digital piano and MIDI keyboard on a basis of renewable pool of hours (up to 240 hours) during the validity period of the library account,
in order to use the digital piano or MIDI keyboard, please report to the Special Collections’ Reading Room within the first hour of booking the equipment. Failure to report within the specified period is tantamount to resignation from the cabin,
in case of reserving the equipment well in advance (over 1 month) User will be asked (via e-mail) to confirm that the reservation is still valid,
User who resigns from the equipment on their own is obliged to cancel the reservation in the digital piano or MIDI keyboard reservation system,
the condition for efficient usage of the reservation system is an e-mail address that User provides in the contact details when subscribing to the Library.
Users using the digital piano or MIDI keyboard are obliged to report to the librarian during each visit to present their library/student's ID/employee's ID card and to sign in the guest book legibly.
Work with the equipment must be completed no later than 10 minutes before the Reading Room closes.
When working with a digital piano or MIDI keyboard, one can use:
library materials borrowed on thier library account,
library materials ordered to the Special Collections' Reading Room (general collections),
library materials borrowed from Free Access areas. During each visit the User must collect them and return them to FA areas by themselves,
own materials.
User is fully responsible for the library materials and equipment and is subjected to the Rules of library's materials circulation in the library and information system of the University of Wrocław and the Order regulations in force at the WUL's building.
Violation by the User of Rules and the Order regulations or failure to complay with orders of the librarian results in the User being temporarily deprived of the ability to use the WUL's services.
Detailed rules of usage a digital piano
The KAWAI CA901 digital piano is available to the Users.
You can connect a Bluetooth-enabled device (e.g., wireless headphones, a tablet, or a mobile phone) to the piano to play educational materials or accompaniment. The connected device must be in good working order and not interfere with the instrument's operation or the comfort of other readers.
You can also connect devices to the piano via USB (e.g. a pendrive).
Users may connect USB drives to the digital piano solely for the purpose of playing or recording musical data supported by the instrument. It is prohibited to use USB drives for any other purposes or connect them to the Library's computer equipment. If there are any doubts regarding the operation of a drive, users are required to immediately report the problem to the librarian.
The instrument comes with a user manual in Polish, German, English, Spanish and Italian - please read it carefully before playing.
When you have finished using the instrument, turn it off.
Detailed rules of usage a MIDI keyboard
The ALESIS V49 MIDI keyboard is available to the Users.
The MIDI keyboard can be connected to the computer in the Reading Room or to your own laptop.
A MIDI keyboard requires proper software to function correctly. On the computer in the Reading Room, Users can use the free Musescore software, which allows them to edit sheet music.
The keyboard comes with an instruction manual in English, Spanish, French and Italian - it is recommended to read it before starting work.
After finishing using the MIDI keyboard, disconnect it from computer/laptop.
