The rules for using the collections in the Free Access areas have been described in detail here.


Free Access

The library collections available in the Free Access area of the University Library counts over 250,000 volumes of books located on two levels of the Library building, in 3 locations:Free Access 1 - level 2, Free Access 2 - level 3, divisions A and Z in the Main Reading Room - level 3. In the Free Access areas Users independently search for books on the shelves.

The book collection was arranged on the shelves by divisions - according to the Library of Congress Classification. The division of the book collection into main areas corresponds with scientific disciplines, branches of these disciplines and groups of issues.

The free access to the collection includes selected books published after 2000 and earlier publications, constituting the canon for individual scientific disciplines.

The content of the publication decides about the assignment to a given division. The exception is the General Division, which includes encyclopedias, general dictionaries, information publications and bi- and multilingual dictionaries.

Subject librarians
The subject librarians take care of the content of the Free Access book collections. Their tasks include, among others: selection of the book for collections, preparation of a subject description using the subject headings, assignment of collections to individual divisions, substantive consultations and assistance for users.

Division A consists of General works. It includes all kinds of encyclopedias, lexicons and thematic dictionaries. You can also find here books containing broadly understood information about museums, museology, collecting and exhibiting in Poland and in the world. This section also contains books about academies, foundations and scientific societies, winners of honorary titles and prestigious awards in many fields. You can also find information about calendars, almanacs and publications on the history of the humanities.

Division B consists of three main disciplines of knowledge: Philosophy. Psychology. Religion. In the philosophy section, the main periods in the history of European philosophy are distinguished: antiquity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and modern times. Concepts and disciplines, trends and philosophical schools have been located here in historical order. Source works of great thinkers, studies and analyzes of their views and polemics with their inquiries, both on the subject and meta-subject grounds are also present. In the individual sections are included books dealing with the formal and structural aspect of language and cognition, speculative philosophy with ontology, metaphysics or epistemology, as well as the theory of value.

Man, his psyche, cognitive processes, emotions and motivations have always been the source of inspiration and philosophical considerations. The psychology division focuses on to these issues. For centuries, religions have had a huge influence on the shaping of the philosophy, history and culture of the world. The relationship between man and the sacred, theological doctrines, forms of worship or customs - you can learn about these issues from books placed in this division. It also provides detailed information about the world's greatest religions and beliefs of various peoples and ethnic groups, as well as holy books with commentaries.

Division C consists of Auxiliary sciences of History. The division begins with works of general content: encyclopedias, dictionaries, collective works, conference materials, textbooks, etc. Then are separated subdivisions. Subdivision CC is the history of civilization, that includes publications describing the rise and fall of great civilizations, cultural changes over the centuries, civilization problems of modern times, including Western civilization, civilization changes taking place in the contemporary world, as well as forecasts for the future. Human curiosity has always been aroused by the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations. You can also find material on this topic here. The history of civilization ends with publications on specific issues, such as technology and civilization, wars and civilization. The next subdivision is archeology that contains necessary knowledge to learn about the history of cultures and civilizations. Methodological materials, profiles of outstanding archaeologists, archaeological heritage, but also the secrets and puzzles of archeology can be found in this section.

Historical sources: archives, documents, seals are included the next subdivision - CD. Publications on, for example, work of the royal chancellery looked like, but also work methodology and document management in contemporary archives can be found here. Ways of determining time, calendars, numismatic items, medals, inscriptions, but also flags, coats of arms and banners are the topics of subsequent publications.

Division C closes with biographical publications, both on the history of biographical literature and collections of biographies of outstanding, extraordinary people. They may be of interest not only to history researchers.

Division DHistory, includes publications on the following topics: universal history and history of individual countries, broken down by epochs, regions, and in the case of cities, into districts and architectural elements (e.g. bridges, public buildings, parks, etc.), ethnography of individual countries, history of wars, battles, military units, history of customs and cultures of individual countries. Each thematic subgroup (e.g. countries) is divided into general issues (sources, conferences, biographies, historiography, etc.), as well as the so-called special topics that includes books that describe a topic in more details in terms of different aspects. In the "History" (D) division you can find both scientific and popular science publications. There are books that are biographies of famous historical figures, but also ones that contain, for example, memories and diaries of these people.

In division E are included publications on History and civilization of the Americas and United States, including the history of pre-Columbian civilizations, other more interesting issues are: the history of American Indians (eg Apache, Comanche, Sioux), the war for independence - including the participation of prominent Poles such as Tadeusz Kościuszko, Kazimierz Pułaski. Other important issues include the history of slavery in the United States, the Civil War, information about all US presidents and first ladies (there is also J. Kennedy-Onassis, Hillary Clinton and Melania Trump), books about Zbigniew Brzeziński, President Carter's advisers, US diplomacy, Polish-American relations, publications about Polonia in the United States.

Division F includes Latin American history and culture, including: the civilization of the Aztecs, Maya and Inca Indians; books about interesting places - e.g. Macchu Picchu, Mayan pyramids; history of great geographical discoveries, history of missions, information on how the countries of South and Central America were created, revolutions in these countries (e.g. Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua). There are also guides on Canada, books about Canadian Polonia, local history of the United States, including publications about US National Parks, guides and publications about New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Appalachia, Alaska, and the Caribbean; guides to Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Easter Island, books by Beata Pawlikowska and Wojciech Cejrowski about Latin America, information about Polonia in Brazil and Argentina.

Division G and its subdivisions include geography, anthropology, sports, and recreation. The publications in this division are sorted in the following order: geography (general), mathematical geography, cartography, physical geography, oceanography, environmental sciences, human ecology, human geography, anthropology, folklore, customs, recreation and free time. The general works include publications on the history of geography, methodology of geographical research, as well as geographic dictionaries and encyclopedias, biographies of famous geographers, books on toponomics, travel and the history of geographical discoveries. Books on mathematical geography and cartography, physical geography, hydrology and natural disasters, oceanography (GA - GC) are next. Subsequent publications concern environmental sciences and human ecology (GE - GF) as well as anthropology with ethnology and prehistoric archeology (GN). Then there are collections of publications related to folklore (GR), social life and customs (GT), and finally works on recreation, leisure and sport (GV). Books are sorted by regions of the world, countries, cities and from the most ancient times to the present day. Among the many scientific works in the above-mentioned fields, on the shelves you can also find popular travel and hobby books, publications on the impact of man on the environment, biographies of famous footballers, works about fashion or computer gaming.

Division H includes books from the broadly understood Social Sciences. There are specialized publications on, among others, economics, transport, communication, business and finances (including public finances). Division J includes publications from the Political Sciences. It starts with a set of general legislative and executive documents from individual countries. The next main subdivisions are: encyclopedias and dictionaries, theory and methodology of political science, theory of the state, forms, goals and functions of the state, geopolitics, institutions of central and regional public administration. Then there are publications on human rights issues, political participation and electoral systems. The political science division ends with publications related to the subject of international relations. In particular subdivisions, in addition to works on contemporary issues, there are books related to the history of a given field as well as biographies and characteristics of the achievements of the most important authors.

Division L includes works in the field of broadly understood education and upbringing. Contains general collections of publications on education. This division is divided into subdivisions and covers the history of education, the history of pedagogical doctrines and biographical dictionaries of people associated with education and upbringing. This division also includes works on, inter alia, theory and practice in education at all levels: pre-school, school, university; research on children, educational psychology, teacher education, school administration, school architecture and equipment, school life and customs. Specific aspects of education include self-education, home education, education in public and private schools; social, economic, demographic aspects of education, moral and religious education (of various denominations), educational sociology, the relationship between the state and education; education: political, industrial, multicultural, adult education, education in various countries. This section also includes works on the history of schools, universities, research institutes, sorted by continents and then individual countries and towns.

Division M includes publications from the general division of Music. This division is divided into two subdivisions ML and MT. The ML subdivision includes broadly understood music literature. Books that discuss music from a historical-critical and theoretical perspective. There are information publications about music (encyclopedias, dictionaries), books about the history of musical genres, musical styles, composers' biographies; theoretical and musicological works (philosophy, aesthetics of music); literature discussing the social functioning of music (music industry, festivals), as well as works on the physical manifestations of music (acoustics, physiological aspects of music reception). The MT subdivision includes literature about studying and teaching music and literature dealing with the practical-technical side of music. In this subdivision are included books on the methods of teaching music at different stages of education, various systems of music pedagogy, the history of music education and also literature on the performance of music on individual instruments, various instrumental techniques, methods of composition and conducting, vocal techniques; use of music in theaters and also in the media (e.g. radio, television).

Division N is devoted to the Fine arts and the artistic currents occurring in them, as well as the periodization of art. Books dealing with general issues related to the fine arts, such as history and philosophy of art or artistic education and aesthetics, are located at the beginning of the division. There are also publications dealing with famous museums, exhibitions and art galleries as well as the secrets of conservation work. Subsequently, the division includes books on individual types of visual arts and their history, as well as their more important aspects and the main forms of expression, creation techniques and types of works present in them. Division ends with a selection of important issues related to arts in general and the biographies of people associated with art.

Division Q – includes general publications, the subject of which is mainly the history of science and its present state, scientific activity as a professional activity, biographies, scientific conferences; a large selection of popular science books is also available. Division consists of the following areas of knowledge: mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, geology, natural science, biology, botany, zoology, human anatomy, physiology and microbiology. The publications included in the Q division cover - by definition - the topic of science from the theoretical and methodological sides. Publications on applied science and technological development are included in a separate division marked with the symbol T. This note also applies to specific fields of science in their practical applications.

In the division U - Military science, there are publications devoted to such issues as: history of military science and military, military administration (military ceremonies, education, medical services, mail, banks, etc.), various types of armed forces, weapons of all types, military transport (including various military vehicles), war veterans, military engineering, misdemeanors and crimes against military discipline, military use of animals, military fortifications, intelligence and counterintelligence, logistics for military purposes, tactics, equipment of armies and individual soldiers. Both scientific and popular publications are present here. There is a division into countries and the so-called generalia, i.e. general issues (at the beginning of the thematic subdivision) and then detailed ones.

Division Z includes publications on Bibliography. Library science. Information resources and is divided into two subdivisions. It covers widely understood issues related to books - book history, literature, history of print (cryptography, manuscripts, incunabula, bookbinding, bookselling) and libraries (architectural solutions for buildings, organization and management, library communication systems, rules for cataloging and classifying collections). Bibliographies occupy a separate place, including national bibliographies and publications related to the issues of scientific information - theory and methodology of information and library activities (collecting, processing and sharing data, electronic data sources).
