Department duties

Duties of the Collections Cataloging Department include:

  • formal, subject and technical cataloging of monographs and periodicals submitted to the University Library and selected libraries within the library and information system of the University of Wrocław,
  • cataloging of traditional and electronic books and periodicals.

Sections of Department


Monographs Section

Duties of the Monographs Section include:

  • formal and subject cataloging of monographs,
  • entering and modifying bibliographic records and descriptors,
  • verification of the correctness of links between bibliographic records and resource and item records,
  • assigning Library of Congress classifications and supplementing records with expanded subject headings in English for monographs selected for Free Access areas.

Serials Section

Duties of the Serials Section include:

  • implementing a policy of collecting serials, with particular emphasis on Silesian-Lusatian issues,
  • registering of new acquisitions of library materials in the library system,
  • formal and subject cataloging of serials from all sources of acquisitions,
  • registering and technical processing of library materials,
  • transferring new titles of periodicals to the WUL's reading rooms,
  • selection and registering of restricted collections,
  • transferring serials to the Book Storage and Free Access Department,
  • management of redundant publications in cooperation with the libraries of the UoW's library and information system,
  • cooperation with libraries of the UoW's library and information system in the field of training and advice on the registering and cataloging of journals.

Departmental Libraries Section

Duties of the Departmental Libraries Section include:

  • formal and subject cataloging of books transferred from selected libraries of the library and information system,
  • conducting training and consultations for library employees of the University of Wrocław's library and information system in the broadly understood field of cataloging monograph publications,
  • cooperation with departmental libraries and the substantive coordinator from the Scientific Information Department in the field of transferring the cataloged books and organizing transport.

Technical Section

Duties of the Technical Section include:

  • verification of the correctness of bibliographic records submitted from the Monographs Section,
  • supplementing item records,
  • technical processing of library materials and preparing them for making them available to users,
  • transferring library materials to the Book Storage and Free Access Department as well as to the WUL's special collections departments,
  • fullfiling duties regarding protocols of changes in referrals, absolute deficiencies, discrepancies and corrections,
  • supervising inventories.
