Reminiscences of the IFLA Congress in WUL

From 19.08.2017 to 25.08.2015 in Wroclaw took place the 83rd IFLA World Congress with this year’s motto: "Libraries. Solidarity. Society".

The main venue of the conference was the Centennial Hall, but many accompanying events, so called satellite conferences, workshops, discussion panels etc., took place in the host city (Wroclaw) libraries, libraries in Lower Silesia region, as well as in selected libraries in other Polish cities and foreign cities, in most cases in states neighboring our country.

The Wroclaw University Library has been actively involved in the co-organization of this global undertaking, in which took part over 3,000 librarians from all around the world.

In the new building of the Library on F. Joliot-Curie 12 St. several events accompanying the World Library and Information Congress were held, according to the following schedule:

  • Monday 21.08.2017 - Conference Collections and Books [A]cross Borders organized jointly by two IFLA sections: Rare Books and Special Collections Section and Indigenous Matters Section (detailed program and photos from the conference);

  • Tuesday 22.08.2017 - Workshop Understanding Your Library from the Inside Out: A Workshop in Library Ethnography for User Assessment organized by IFLA's Social Science Libraries Section (detailed program and photos from the workshop);

  • Wednesday 23.08.2017 - Meetings of WUL’s Direction:
    9:00 a.m. - with a delegation from the Bitola University Library in Macedonia (signing a cooperation agreement, presentation of the Library) - photos from the visit;
    10:30 a.m. - with a delegation from the Canton Libraries in China (exchange of experiences, discussion of possible cooperation, presentation of the Library) - photos from the visit;

  • Thursday 24.08.2017 - 10:00 a.m. - meeting of WUL’s Direction with a delegation from the National Library of Belarus: discussion of possible cooperation, presentation of the Library and selected collections from the special collections (manuscripts, old prints, maps, music sheets) - photos from the visit;

  • Friday 25.08.2017 - Workshop/disscussion panel Impact of the IFLA Library Reference Model on ISBD, RDA and Other Bibliographic Standards: A Working Meeting (detailed program, presentations and photos from the workshop);
    two organized tours:
    11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - tour for 60 persons - Presentation of WUL's special collections
    3:15 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. - tour for 60 persons - Presentation of the University Library - its potential, collections, building (detailed program of both tours) - photos from the tour presenting special collections and photos from the tour presenting WUL (including RaDU and SCCW)
