General rules. Subscribing. Prolongation of library card/account

  • Documents needed for subscription:

Students with electronic student’s ID cards with photo: student’s ID cards with photo, identification document and student obligation card (with written form of student’s responsibility for books borrowed from library). No fee is charged for activation of library account.

Students (others): student obligation card (with written form of student’s responsibility for books borrowed from library) and identification document. Fee for library card is 20 PLN.

Employees of University of Wrocław or other institutions of higher education, who are entitled to make use of the University Library on the basis of an agreement between the Library and the schools: identification document and proof of employment. Fee for library card is 20 PLN.

  • Can I subscribe to WUL via Internet?

Yes. Subscribing to Library takes place only in online mode via electronic forms. For receiving library card or activating library account one should go to Local Lending Department with needed documents to verify personal data.

  • What is the electronic library account (only for students with electronic student’s ID cards with photo)?

Students of Wroclaw’s higher education institutions with electronic student’s ID cards with photo have within them coded 10 characters’ library account number with the following structure:
2 characters' institution code and number of student's ID card (quantum of characters within it varies in dependence of institution). Remaining characters are zeros put between institution code and student's ID card number.
This number should be written in the proper field in the electronic form for subscribing to WUL.

  • I am not student or employee of UoW. Can I still use WUL?

Yes. Everyone over 18 can use WUL’s collections in the reading rooms after purchasing library card for reading rooms (annual, for 10 or 2 days).

  • I am studying on other state’s higher education institution. Can I borrow books from Library?

Yes. First there is need to activate electronic library account (for students with electronic student’s ID cards with photo) or receive traditional library card.

  • I am studying on Opole University. Can I borrow books?

No. Persons, who don’t live or study in Wroclaw, can only use Library’s collection in reading rooms or use services of Interlibrary Lending Department in mediation of e.g. Opole University Library.

  • Do I have to be registered user (have active library account/library card) to use reading room?

Yes. Basis for using reading rooms [Main Reading Room, Current and Archive Periodicals Reading Room and Silesian Collection Reading Room and Special Collection’s Reading Room) is valid identification document and valid library card or electronic student’s ID card. Ordering materials to the reading rooms is possible only by electronic means (for all materials that are present in electronic or digitized catalogs). Materials, that are not present in these catalogs, must be ordered on traditional order slips.

  • What is needed to receive card for reading room?

Persons who are not related to the University of Wrocław or any other Wroclaw’s institutions of higher education who want to use Wroclaw University Library’s reading rooms [Main Reading Room, Current and Archive Periodicals Reading Room and Silesian Collection Reading Room and Special Collection’s Reading Room) must buy card for the reading rooms (annual, for 10 or 2 days).
Persons subscribed to WUL receive in the Local Lending Department free of charge, name card for reading rooms. Persons with library account activated on the basis of electronic student’s ID cards, when ordering to the reading rooms, put number 3 before the library account number.

  • I have begun studying on the second faculty. Can I receive second library card/activate second library account?

No. When studying on two faculties there is no need for two library accounts/cards – after notifying the Local Lending Department of this fact, there is potentiality to borrow twice as many books as students of one faculty.

  • I am studying on UoW and in private high school. Can I borrow more books?

No. More books can only borrow persons, who study on two faculties of state’s higher education institutes and on Papal Faculty of Theology and Metropolitan High Seminary in Wroclaw.

  • I have change study program from extramural/evening to regular (or vice versa). Should I report this?

Yes. All changes in study program should be reported in the Local Lending Department.

  • I have lost my library card. What should I do?

Report this as soon as possible to Local Lending Department – only then library account could be blocked and none unauthorized person can use lost card. Copy of the lost card costs 20 PLN.

  • I am student of UoW, but I don’t have library card/account and I am not using WUL. Do I have to sign student obligation card?

Yes. It is required by deaneries of UoW.

  • Is library card/account valid for the whole period of studying?

Yes. But at the beginning of every academic year there is need to prolong library card/account. It is free of charge and takes place in the Local Lending Department. Students have to present student's ID card, valid for current academic year.

  • I am student of Faculty of Law, Administration and Economy. Can I prolong my library card/account in my home faculty’s library?

Yes. Employees and students of all kind of studies of Faculty of Chemistry of UoW, Faculty of Social Sciences of UoW, Faculty of Law, Administration and Economy of UoW, Institute of Pedagogy of UoW, Institute of Psychology of UoW, Institute of History of UoW, Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of UoW, Institute of Polish Philology of UoW and Institute of Scientific Information and Librarianship UoW can prolong their library cards/accounts in their home faculties’ libraries.


Ordering and lending books

  • Can I order books to the Main Reading Room via internet

Yes. Ordering to the reading rooms is possible only by online means for users with active library accounts, name cards for Reading Rooms or paid card for the reading rooms (annual, for 10 or 2 days).

  • How can I order books to the Main Reading Room or Special Collections Reading Room?

First, you need to find searched book in the electronic catalog or in the proper digitized catalog. Then, in the case of electronic catalog, from the items list pick up one, that have Shelf Location “Biblioteka Uniwersytecka”, “BU-… (name of department either on Szajnocha St. or Fryderyka Joliot-Curie 12 St.) and Status “Dostępny” or “Na miejscu”. After clicking on “Request” button in the text field “Patron Number” write down Your library account number with number 3 before it (for students with electronic student’s ID cards) or number to the Reading Room from name library card, Guest Card or paid card for the reading rooms (annual, for 10 or 2 days), Your name, check entered data and submit order. For ordering from digitized catalogs, you must write in the order form all required data from the proper library card. For books with Shelf Location "BU-Lectorium” there is no need for ordering them – there are in Main Reading Room’s reference collection available in the free access.

  • How to order books to Local Lending Department via internet?

First, you need to find searched book in the electronic catalog or in the Digitized alphabetical catalog. Then, in the case of electronic catalog, from the items list pick up one, that have Shelf Location “Biblioteka Uniwersytecka” and Status “Available". After clicking on “Request” button in the text field “Patron Number” write down Your library account number with number 2 before it (for students with electronic student’s ID card) or number from traditional library card (it is under bar code), Your name, check entered data and submit order. For ordering from digitized catalogs, you must write in the order form all required data from the proper library card. Books published up to 1950 can only be ordered to the reading room.

  • I’ve tried to order books via internet, but message, that my order haven't been fulfilled has appeared. Why?

In the same message will be given number of error, some of them are explain below text box. Most common causes of error are: unreturned books, expire of account (it should be prolong at the beginning of every academic year), exceeded limit of books for order or unpaid penalties.

  • How to check my account?

For borrowed books: in the top left corner of electronic catalog, there is “Patron Access” menu. In Patron ID's text field should be written library account number with number 2 before it (for students with electronic student’s ID cards) or library card number (it is under bar code). As Password serves PESEL number or date of birth followed by 000, i.e. yyyymmdd000.
For materials in Reading Room: In Patron ID's text field should be written library account number with number 3 before it (for students with electronic student’s ID cards) or library card number for Reading Room. As Password serves PESEL number or date of birth followed by 000, i.e. yyyymmdd000.

  • What will happen, if I don’t return books on given term?

When term for return of books has expired, library account is automatically blocked, so no more books could be ordered. Also, penalty is charged. Account will be unblocked when books are returned and penalty is paid.

  • I have lost borrowed book. What should I do?

Loosing book should be reported to the Local Lending Department. The same book as the lost one, or newer edition, should be bought back. If it is impossible to accomplish, it should be paid accordingly to rules. Evaluation is done by Local Lending Department.

  • Can I reserved book, that is already borrowed?

No. This function is still inoperative.


Ordering journals

  • Can I order journals to the Reading Room via internet?

Yes. Ordering to the Current and Archive Periodicals Reading Room and Silesian Collection Reading Room is possible only in electronic form. After finding in the electronic catalog or digitized journal catalog searched journal, push button “Request” and in the text field “Patron Number” write down Your library account number with number 3 before it (for students with electronic student’s ID cards) or number to the Reading Room from name library card or paid card for the reading rooms (annual, for 10 or 2 days). Order should be completed with information about journal year and/or number of volume.

  • If I am searching for journal, should I check both catalogs?

Yes. Electronic catalog holds information about all journals that are presently published, and about some that are no longer published. In digitized catalog, there are titles of journals, that are not yet entered into electronic catalog.

  • If I am not a user of Library, can I still order journals to the reading room?

Yes. Every person over 18 that have paid card for reading rooms can order materials to the Current and Archive Periodicals Reading Room and Silesian Collection Reading Room via electronic form.


Catalog

  • Book has status w rzeczowym opracowaniu. What does it mean?

It means, that this book is undergoing subject cataloging and it is not yet available for users.

  • Book has status w oprawie. What does it mean?

It means, that this book is undergoing conservation process due to it’s bad condition and is temporary not available for users. Process of conservation can not be quicken.

  • What does phrase Due Date combined with date mean?

This book has been borrowed and should be returned on given day.

  • Book has status właśnie zwrócony. What does it mean?

Book has returned to the Local Lending Department, but is still not in it’s place in the Storage Department. It will be available for lending next day.

  • Book have Shelf Location e.g. Psychology. What does it mean?

This book is not present in the Main Library, but in Library of the Institute of Psychology. Departmental libraries (except of libraries of Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Administration and Economy, Institue of History, Institute of Pedagogy, Institute of Psychology, Institute of History, Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, Institute of Polish Philology and Institute of Scientific Information and Librarianship UoW) do not apply electronic ordering and do not update status of materials.
